Cultural Engagement System with Physical + Digital Loops

Context
In a crowded landscape of packaged-goods partnerships, the collaboration between OREO and Nintendo presented a unique challenge: how to design an experience where participation, discovery, and play mattered more than visibility or hype. Rather than treating the product as a simple consumer artifact, we framed the collaboration as a participatory world, one that invited collective interaction and extended engagement beyond a single encounter.

Designed as an encounter with a closed, intentional ecosystem, this experience honored Nintendo’s philosophy of constraint, where meaning emerges from limitation, not excess.

The physical environment mirrored the brand’s internal logic, making structure, play, and authorship perceptible without over-explaining them.

Concept
The project was conceived as a multi-layered engagement architecture; physical touches, distributed interaction, and networked participation designed to create emergent behaviors. The goal was not to interrupt people with a message, but to invite them into a set of rules and conditions that they could explore and internalize on their own terms.

Approach
We released a special edition OREO pack with sixteen unique embossments, with each representing a character, power-up, or concept. Each pack functioned as an access point into a shared system: a QR code transported users to the rules of a collaborative Super Mario game built around a real-time global progress tracker. This tracker displayed collective progress toward a common objective: dunking Bowser in milk.

Rather than defining individual victory, the system encouraged collective participation, so progress was visible and meaningful to each participant. The experience wasn’t just about scanning a code. It was about entering a shared context in which actions had traceable consequences.

Creative Leadership & Execution
I led the design of the engagement system, not just the physical artifacts, but the conditions of participation, the logic of interaction, and the integration of physical + digital flows. This included aligning creative vision with fabrication, vendor execution, digital integration, and global rollout logistics. A core leadership requirement was to ensure that every node in the experience reinforced the same set of rules and expectations, so participants could intuitively understand their role within the broader structure.

Outcome
The work transformed a packaged product into a living cultural interface. It enabled collective play at a global scale while preserving clarity, coherence, and a sense of agency for individual participants. When the community reached the shared goal of “dunking Bowser,” we extended the system with limited-edition physical rewards, closing the loop between participation and physical acknowledgment without resorting to spectacle or noise.

A limited-edition pack introduced sixteen collectible cookie embossments inspired by Super Mario characters and power-ups.

A QR-driven game let fans play together, tracking global progress as the world worked to dunk Bowser in milk.
